Dawn Battiste manages the Litigation Unit of the Land Loss Prevention Project and serves as Deputy Director of the greater law firm of which SmartGrowth is a part. She joined Land Loss in 2002 and coordinates and participates in the efforts of the attorney team to preserve land tenure through direct legal services and outreach to farmers, landowners, and agricultural professionals statewide. Ms. Battiste graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (B.A. and M.A., English; J.D). During her career, she has handled a variety of cases at both the state and federal level and is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. Ms. Battiste has served as the chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s General Practice, Solo, and Small Firm Section. She is the managing editor of the North Carolina General Practice Deskbook, Third Edition, and a course planner through the NCBA for legal education encompassing business topics.
